The Joys of Impending Motherhood

Cyrene Fabros

It’s been exactly 1 month today that Robert and I found out that we are parents-to-be, which has been a source of great excitement and joy in our family – we have all been waiting for it! I haven’t been online for almost as long though. The ‘morning sickness’ has been really extreme and gave me no choice but to go on a pregnancy-imposed hiatus from real life. My sister-in-law’s boyfriend coined the phrase ‘PC-dizzy’ when I described to him how I felt whenever I sat down in front of the computer to work, check my email (oh man, don’t even get me started on how much email I have to sort now), or even to talk to friends on IM. My normal day-to-day activities were seriously hampered.

For most of the time since the day we found out I was expecting, it seems the only thing I have been doing besides trying to eat and keep the food down, was sleep. I cannot believe how much sleep I have gotten these past few weeks! And no matter how much I sleep during the day, I find myself getting really drowsy and heading for bed at 8 or 9pm – surprising only because I don’t normally go to bed until 11 or 12mn.

I used to think that pregnancy would be smooth-sailing for me, as it was for my Mom (or so I thought at the time). But I have been hospitalized twice in 2 weeks – once overnight and then the most recent was last week for 4 days. The doctor calls my condition Hyperemesis Gravidarum, a condition in which the pregnant woman, in this case, ME, suffers from excessive or abnormal vomiting, more severe than the normal ‘morning sickness’. I had to be admitted due to dehydration and weight loss (lost 11lbs in under 1 month, just my luck that I lose this much weight when I don’t want or need to. HAHA, joke’s on me). And while we’re on the subject, don’t let the term fool you, ‘morning sickness’ can happen at any time of the day or night as I have learned the hard way.

Thankfully, my wonderful husband and family have been truly awesome people. They have helped me move about with the IV and patiently sat/slept in the hard, narrow hospital cot all throughout my stay.

The doctors cannot confirm it, but it was also the case for my sister Chilie when she was pregnant with her daughter Sam, so we suspect that our history with hyperacidity has lots to do with it. So a word of advice to all of you women who are planning on getting pregnant soon, it would be wise to cut down on acidic, caffeinated stuff even before you start planning to conceive. I was diagnosed with hyperacidity September of last year and so I immediately stopped drinking coffee and soda as per the doctor’s orders (believe me, this wasn’t easy as I was a heavy coffee and soda drinker versus drinking water). Still I believe its effects have played a major part in my difficulty over the past few weeks.

To date, I am 10 weeks and 3 days along (posting scanned images of the ultrasound as soon as we can get the scanner working!) and Robert and I are EXTREMELY PSYCHED to meet our little one. It was the most emotional thing when we first heard our baby’s heartbeat – nothing comes close to the overwhelming joy that sound brought us both. The past few weeks have probably been the most trying and tiring of my life thus far, and who knows what the next few months will be like? All I know is that when THE DAY comes when we are finally face to face with the best gift we will ever receive, it will all have been worth it.

  • @Andie: Thanks very much! I know! I remember looking at your pics with your babies (as well as my sister Chilie’s, Mylene’s, Divine’s and all my other friends with kids! hehehe) and wishing someday soon I will have my very own child to care for and love. Prayer answered! Haha.

@Mylene: Yup! I heard from a family friend who was sick until 5 months … Read Moreinto her pregnancy – for all of her 3 kids! Grabe… I can’t even imagine it! Thank God though, mine seems to be winding down. Been able to eat semi-normally since getting home from the hospital and kept it all down! /bow. Hehe. Nausea na lang ang kalaban ko pagdating ng hapon until evening. Tinutulog ko na lang siya! Unfortunately, ginger tea didn’t help me… siguro dahil hyperacidic ako, it kept me up all night the one time I tried it – as in. I’m an oddity, I know now for sure lol.

@Divine: Thanks, I know God is watching over me and my little one ngayon pa lang. Learned from my OB that I my blood type was O Rh negative too.

Hehe.. Anyway, ayun nga, learned that it could cause complications if my baby’s blood type is Rh positive. Thanks to modern science and medicine meron nang gamot (http://www.rhogam.com/Patient/Pages/default.aspx) so there’s generally no need for me to worry. THANKS EVERYONE for your prayers!
@Tita Pebbles: Thank you po, in a way parang apo niyo na nga din po iton haha.

  • hey! hope you feel better soon. and dont believe that morning sickness will stop at 13 wks. na-ah. aint true! i was sick till 20 wks!! but its good though. if you’re getting a lot of morning sickness, just think that its good for the baby. your body’s producing enough hormones for bub (vital for his/her growth).

its hard work but its all worth it! the joy is purely indescribable! all the best!!

try to drink some ginger tea…it helps with nausea.

ayan, i’m missing my salt & pepper na tuloy…hehehe. conrats again and just enjoy.
